Have you heard of Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Phil Mickelson or Chad Chambell? Approximately 65% of the professionals on the USPGA Tour played collegiate golf in America. Golf is widely regarded as the best route to a pro golf career because of the following factors: intense competition – Playing week in and week out against the best amateur golfers in the world, world class courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Pebble Beach, Augusta National and many more.
Golf scholarships are great for golf development and academics. Universities and colleges award golf scholarships to very talented golfers, which enables the athlete to participate in collegiate, intercollegiate matches and national championships. If you are a male or female athlete you are able to gain golf scholarships.
Golf Scholarships – When is the best time?
The best time to go to the USA with a golf scholarship is right after graduation from high school or up to two years after. Only athletes aged 18 – 24 can compete within the college leagues, any older and you will be looking at competing in the NAIA. Coaches are increasingly committing to younger athletes as this gives them the opportunity to work with the athletes for a longer period of time. It is also possible to go to the USA for one, two, three or four years, it depends on if you wish to seek a bachelor’s degree from your time there. We would recommend going to America as early as possible because this will give you the best chance of gaining a sports scholarship and turning professional after college.
Golf scholarships – How good do you have to be?
Athletic golf scholarships can be achieved if you are at the right level. To be considered for a scholarship to America a golfer should be playing off a handicap of 4 or better by the time they’re ready to leave for the states. To be considered for a scholarship to one of the top universities in America an athlete should be competing in the top national tournaments, this will show college coaches that the athlete/player is ready to compete at a high level in the USA.
Coaches will also look at an athlete’s potential, it’s a vital aspect, as coaches know from experience that even moderate athletic performance can be boosted immensely with their intensive training methods. A college recruitment coach will look at a sport CV or the athlete, photographs, video and our staffs advice regarding the athlete’s ability.
